“If you've got a skill to offer, we're happy to look at what you have to offer to our country … But obviously if we don't need the skill, if you haven't got a skill, then there's a case for us saying that this is not the right time for you to apply to come to our country.”
— (Former) Prime Minister, February 2008
“Migration has to support Britain’s national interests. A new Australian-style points-based system will be simpler, clearer and easier to enforce … Crucially it will give us the best way of letting in only those people who have something to offer Britain.”
— Immigration Minister, February 2007
The most radical shake-up of Britain’s immigration laws for over 35 years has now come into force. The complex and often confusing legislation dating back to the 1971Immigration Act has been superseded by a “single, consistent and coherent framework” for dealing with potential immigrants.
One of the key elements of the new framework is the introduction of an ‘Australian-style’ Points Based System which, it is hoped, will lead to a “clear and simple legal system for fast, but fair decisions”. This has already had a major impact on both public sector and private sector organisations – with the UK labour market still suffering shortages of both skilled and unskilled workers in certain sectors, many employers in this country are turning to non-UK Nationals, and in many cases non-EU Nationals, to meet their recruitment needs.
This special one-day workshop provides an invaluable opportunity for HR/recruitment advisers, organisational development professionals and legal advisers to gain a detailed insight into the mechanisms involved in working with the Points Based System. Throughout the day, participants will take part in a series of practical, hands-on exercises enabling them to piece together the vital components needed to develop a successful framework for vetting and employing non-UK nationals.
