It is now nearly three years since the most radical shake-up of Britain’s immigration laws for nearly four decades came into force. The complex and often confusing legislation dating back to the 1971 Immigration Act was superseded by a “single, consistent and coherent framework” for dealing with potential immigrants.
One of the key elements of the framework is the adoption of an ‘Australian-style’ points-based system which ministers believe will lead to a “clear and simple legal system for fast, but fair decisions”. This will have a major impact on both public sector and private sector organisations – with the UK labour market still suffering shortages of both skilled and unskilled workers in certain sectors, many employers in this country are turning to non-UK Nationals, and in many cases non-EU Nationals, to meet their recruitment needs.
Following a major public consultation, new measures have recently been announced. The proposed reforms seek to make entrance criteria tougher, introduce new limits on work entitlements and close the post-study work route.
This special one-day training seminar provides a timely opportunity for HR/recruitment advisers, organisational development professionals and legal advisers to understand the new immigration landscape and its impact on vetting and employing non-UK nationals. Participants will also gain a valuable update on the Government’s immigration policy, including the introduction of an immigration cap in April 2011 and potential exemptions such as Intra-company transfers.

“ … The Government believes that immigration has enriched our culture and strengthened our economy, but that it must be controlled so that people have confidence in the system. We also recognise that to ensure cohesion and protect our public services, we need to introduce a cap on immigration and reduce the number of non-EU immigrants.”
— ‘The Coalition: Our Programme for Government’, May 2010
“ I want enforcement and compliance to be the cornerstone of our immigration system, and we are making it more difficult for people to live in the UK illegally by taking action against employers that flout our rules ... Any employers found to be abusing our immigration system risk losing their license to sponsor any migrant workers.”
— Immigration Minister, May 2011
